Labia Reduction

Labia reduction is a procedure to reduce enlarged labia majora or labia minora.

A) LABIA MINORA

There are two possible solutions to reduce labia minora: an operation limited to the region below the clitoris or a more complex operation including the region above the clitoris. The overall composition of the body must be considered when deciding on the extent of the procedure.

Superfluous tissue is removed and an overall asthetic and harmonious appearance is made of the region.

The procedure is done under general anesthesia but can be done under local anesthesia if the patient so desires.

An inpatient stay is not necessary.

Before the Operation

Unless there are contraindications, the operation should not be done within a week of the next period and the region should also be completely shaven before the operation, both for reasons of hygiene. No blood thinning agents such as aspirin are to be taken within the week prior to the operation.

During the Operation

First the labia are accurately measured and the tissue to be removed marked. This ensures that the best symmetry possible is reached. Superfluous skin and tissue are removed from the enlarged labia minora so as to achieve most natural proportion. Soluble stitches are used to close the incisions.

After the Operation

In order to speed up healing and avoid complications, a sterile bandage and spray-on bandage is used to protect the wounds. Hip baths are used to keep the region clean. Urine has no negitive impact as it is sterile. Healing time is the same as for a episiotomy after childbirth (approx. 5-7 days).

The area is examined regularly by physicians until healing is complete. We are available 24 hours a day for any questions or problems.

Possible Complications

As with any operation, tissue may swell but swelling will subside after a few days. Sometimes secondary bleeding or inflammation can result. There is no loss in sensitivity.

B) LABIA MAJORA

A reduction of the labia majora is achieved through the removal of extra fat tissue though liposuction. The procedure is done under local anesthesia but can be done under general anesthesia if the patient so desires. An inpatient stay is not necessary.
